2006 will see the 146th running
of the Melbourne Cup on November 7 at Flemington Racecourse.
Makybe Diva is the only horse to have won three Melbourne Cups
achieving the feat with three successive Cup victories in
2003-04 and 05.
Three horses have been able to win consecutive Cups. Archer
(1861-62), Rain Lover (1968-69) and Think Big (1974-75). Peter
Pan is the only other dual Melbourne Cup winner (1932-34).
James Bartholomew Cummings is the most successful trainer of
Melbourne Cup winners having provided the winner of the
greatest two-mile handicap on 11 occasions. Five times the
Cups King has provided the quinella. His last Melbourne Cup
winner was Rogan Josh in 1999.
The last favourite to win the Melbourne Cup was Makybe Diva in 2005 paying $3.80
